Out-of-home regulation: Legislators move to stymie Salt Lake City billboard ban

Efforts by politicians to curb the spread of digital billboards in U.S. communities are nothing new. But in Salt Lake City, there’s a twist to the tale: while the mayor seeks tight limits on the giant digital signs, two state legislators have tabled bills that would largely prevent the city from imposing restrictions. There has been a moratorium on new digital billboards in Salt Lake City – which currently has half a dozen – since April 2011, allowing staff of mayor Ralph Becker to prepare regulations that would limit them to freeway sites.
