Digital Signage – Content

Thinking about Words

I was thinking about digital signage content the other day – you know the actual words that we use to get our ideas across. For electronic signage, they have to be concise and accurate.

Anyway, it got me thinking about “contronyms” that’s when a single word has two exactly opposite meanings, such as “buckle” which can mean connect or break/collapse, or “fast” which can mean quick or stuck (as in not going anywhere). Here’s a sample list of contronyms.

These words are fun but you have to be aware of alternate meanings when you write your digital signage messages. For instance you probably wouldn’t want to say “throw out” an idea if it could mean either “propose” or “reject” the idea.

Just my thoughts for today…
