Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
The icon who represented millions
Martin Luther King, Jr. was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.
His success with peaceful protest methods sent a long-lasting message that African Americans deserve equality as much as anyone else does.
King was assassinated in 1968. He is honored on the third Monday of January every year, which is close to his birthday.
National Hispanic Heritage Month
From September 15 through October 15, Americans celebrate the cultures and histories of American citizens whose ancestors from Hispanic regions.
September 15 is the day of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan helped to start this celebration in the late 1970's and enact it into law several years later.
Black History Month
In February, we pay tribute to African Americans
The celebration of black history began in 1926 with the celebration of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass and their devotion to the mission to give African Americans freedom.
The week-long celebration was soon turned into a month-long celebration upon realizing how important it was to commemorate the accomplishments of African Americans over the past decades.
