Start an Emergency Fund

Pay yourself first.

No matter what your financial state is, it's wise to find some amount of money in your budget to put into an emergency fund every month.

Having money to use for emergencies can keep you out of trouble financially and help you sleep better at night.

If you get into the habit of saving money and treating it as a monthly expense, pretty soon you'll either have money for the emergencies you planned for, or early retirement, a vacation, or a down payment on a home.

Don't just shove this money under your mattress; put it in a high-interest savings account, certificate of deposit, or money market account. Otherwise, inflation will erode the value of your savings.
