Rewards can negatively affect motivation

While rewards can definitely change the course of action a person takes, are they always a good way to encourage productivity?

The answer is no. For example, if a child will only happily go to school after receiving candy from their parents, they will only be motivated for the candy, not school.

Certain incentivisation methods are more useful than others. Encouraging a sustained engagement in the activity/action rather than in the reward will harbor healthy motivation.
